Curriculum Outline for Kindergarten 2009-2010
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Listening, repeating, memorizing and creating stories, verses and songs; forming letters in three dimensions, with paint and crayons, tracing letters manually and with the whole body; being read to by older students, creation of personal books, familiarity with classroom labels and words, introduction to “BOB” books.
MATH:
Understanding the sequence and value of numbers 1-30; sorting and classifying of objects; measuring, adding, subtracting and dividing in cooking projects.
SCIENCE:
Physical properties of liquids and solids; describing parts and life cycles of plants and animals; describing the world’s landforms, weather and resources.
HISTORY/TIME SENSE:
Understanding the vocabulary of time (learning days of the week, months); keeping a regular schedule posted in the classroom; learning about time long ago.
MUSIC, ART and DRAMA:
Singing, mood of the fifth and pentatonic scale; exposure to sounds of instruments and musical pieces; movement to music. Colors, shape and line in watercolors and crayon; exposure to art pieces through history; modeling with clay and beeswax; various crafts in each season; development of art vocabulary. Role-playing daily verses and weekly stories; dress-up play, expressive dance; puppetry.
PHSICAL ED and HEALTH:
Small and large motor control, balance and strength through daily walks, jumproping, movement games, bean bag work, balance beams, skipping, hopping, walking on tip toes, somersaults , log rolls, fort-building and gardening (digging, raking, mixing, etc.).
