11-28-10

Hi, Folks!

I hope everyone had a peaceful, warm and abundant weekend; my family did! Between the holiday and the arrival cold/flu season, we had very low attendance last week. As a result, I'm going to go back over "J" and "K" this week. Hayden and Kit have been learning Chinese jump rope (with good-natured help from Malachi) and this week will feature lots of jumping games. If your child wishes to bring something to share that starts with either letter, Monday's the best day for that. I think we'll be seeing a lot of jaguars and kittens, though koalas, kangaroos and jack-in-the-boxes would be welcome too! As usual, books are welcome for sharing anytime.

This week, we'll begin observation of Advent and the count-down to solstice, the shortest day of the year. We'll look at celebrations and images of "Father Christmas" from around the world. If your family has a tradition you'd like to share, please talk to me about incorporating that as well!

We have tickets to a matinee performance at the Ferndale Repertory Theatre on Thursday, December 2. Show time is 10 am., and we should plan to leave the school by 8:30 at the latest. Students who live on the loop road will meet at school BEFORE 8:30; we can pick up others along the way if parents specify on the permission slip. Ben has secured 20 tickets (at a dollar apiece!), so we can accommodate at least six adults. My car will fit two kids in car seats or boosters, or four (snugly) in just seat-belts. Ben's truck can carry older students, but he doesn't need to return to Salmon Creek; ideally, several of you will join us. Please be sure to specify whether or not you'll be able to return students to the school! Depending on the weather and attendance, Ben and I may plan another activity for the later part of the afternoon.

I'm eager to meet with parents to discuss their student's development before Christmas break! Please sign up for a time that works well for you. Plan on about an hour after school one day in the next few weeks. All the children have been doing wonderful work that I look forward to sharing with you.

After Christmas break, we'll be welcoming back an old friend. Ryan wants to return to our school, and he and his dad will be visiting us -- around three o'clock--in the coming weeks to ease this transition. Our class will also be joined at that point by a volunteer aide, Casey. If you haven't met her yet, make time to introduce yourself some afternoon-- she's a wonderful neighbor and great with the kids.

Stay warm,

Kato
